FROM Ayr to Cornwall your protests have flooded in. 'When out in Aldeburgh I must skirt / Vile and ubiquitous dog dirt', wrote a Suffolk reader poetically . . . 'Even walkers on Ilkley Moor require a wary eye,' came the lament from West Yorkshire . . . 'Our pavement is frequently fouled. You need a better side-step than Rob Andrew to circumvent it,' a Bristol reader complained.

If your town or area is badly afflicted by dog-fouling, we offer you the opportunity to nominate it for the title of Dirty Dogs Capital of Britain - and to win a City Break for four in New York, the 'clean dogs' capital of the world. The town or area most deserving of the title, in the opinion of the judges, will be presented with the Dirty Dogs Capital of Britain Award by the Independent on Sunday.

WHAT YOU WIN

The prize for the winning entry is a City Break for four people in New York, the poop-scoopers' paradise. It includes flights, shared coach from JFK/ EWR airports, and three nights in the four-star Warwick Hotel (subject to availability). The holiday must be taken before 27 August 1994.

Flights are on United Airlines, the world's largest carrier, and the hotel is part of the United Vacations package.

HOW TO ENTER

Write and tell us, in no more than 100 words, why your town, village or area deserves the title Dirty Dogs Capital of Britain, and attach as many supporting signatures as possible. The judges (including poet Andrew Motion and IoS editor Ian Jack) will take into consideration the wit of the entry, as well as the facts described. Number of signatures will be taken into account (though will not necessarily be decisive).

Send your entry, by 31 March 1994, to Dirty Dogs Capital of Britain Competition, the Independent on Sunday, 40 City Road, London EC1Y 2DB. (Normal competition rules apply.)
