Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Today, thousands of you will be making your way back from Creamfields in North Winchester - if this gig is anything to go by, 1998 is set to be a great year for festivals. However, when buying tickets for forthcoming festivals, choose carefully as there are too many major festivals fighting for your loot. If you've bought tickets for Universe '98, be aware that the gig has been "called off/cancelled". Sources suggest sluggish ticket sales forced the move but I can confirm, (following a conversation with the relevant Council Licensing Officer), that the promotions team called a halt - not the local council. Choose carefully this summer!
SUNDAY BEST
@ Tea Rooms des Artistes
For two years this gig has offered a clubbing environment that partially endorses the Sunday = day of rest maxim. This is essentially a chill-out club for DJs and punters not fussed about big name spinners and designer labels. If you want to relax and have a drink, come south of the Thames and check out innovative visuals, courtesy of Trajectory and The Light Surgeons, and fresh tunes provided by Danmass, Nick Manasseh and Rob da Bank.
Tonight, 697 Wandsworth Road, Clapham (0961 318 870) 8pm-1am pounds 1.99
UPRISING
@ adelphi
Old theatres and cinemas that make perfect club venues. With clever use of the original fixtures this old flick house is one of the best northern venues. If you can pull yourself away from the impressive upstairs chill- out zones, try dancing in the large marquee below. The tunes here are quite hard and the crowd stylish but not afraid to work hard on the dance floor. You'll be pleasantly surprised how sociable complete strangers are - holding almost a thousand revellers the club is big but not impersonal. Stu Allen makes an appearance on the decks this weekend with support from Kenny Sharp.
Saturdays, Vicarage Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield (0114 256 0640) 10pm- 6am pounds 10
BOOGIE NIGHTS
@ forum
Moving to cheesy disco. Flares, hanglider collars and disco classics will be on show here: any dancefloor filler from the past thirty years is likely to get aired. Clubbers in the '90s tend to be pretentious about what they dance to but if you remember that it's all about having fun then you'll love this gig. Entry is free (before 11pm) to patrons in full disco gear so it's best to completely throw yourself into the experience ... everyone always seems to be smiling when they leave this one.
Fridays, 9-17 Highgate Road, Kentish Town NW5 (0171-344 0044) 9pm-2am pounds 5/pounds 3 with flyer
