Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Why have one Christmas advert when you can have three?

Supermarket ad campaigns are always a highlight in the festive calendar – and Lidl has taken this year’s proceedings very seriously, releasing three clips to promote its Christmas offerings.

Each video is just 20 seconds long and follows an overarching theme, which encourages shoppers to “upgrade” their Christmas and shows revellers going above and beyond to get their celebrations just right.

The first one, which airs on Friday evening, depicts a woman drinking gin at a Christmas party while her guests huddle underneath a 75-foot Canadian fur tree: “bit ambitious, Reno”, a voiceover reads.

In another clip, we meet Jenny, who has apparently “upgraded” her Christmas Day lunch with a rather shiny-looking Turkey, but it’s the 16-piece orchestra performing inches away from her and her guests that seems to be the real – and somewhat questionable – upgrade.

The third video introduces us to Nigel, who used really used his initiative to make Christmas special - by ordering a giant box of snow from The North Pole.

To nobody’s surprise – other than, perhaps, Nigel’s – the crate opens to reveal a mass of water, aka melted snow, which promptly flushes out, pushing him onto the street.

“Christmas is a time to go the extra mile when treating friends and family, and with this series of adverts we want to demonstrate that Lidl is the only place to properly upgrade your festive celebrations,” said Ryan McDonnell, commercial director at Lidl UK.

“Our classic humour and imagination runs through the series, providing Lidl laughs and mouth-watering products to marvel at”.
