Christmas gift video generates slew of racist abuse online
'The comments on this video man... some of y’all disgust me'
A video of a teenager’s family giving her high school boyfriend a car for Christmas has prompted a wave of racist comments online.
Madison Duke and Chris Hunter have been together for 11 months and have both been inundated with abusive comments after Duke posted the short clip on Twitter on Saturday.
The couple, who live in Dallas, Texas, were shocked at the responses and have been sharing screenshots of the comments in a bid to spread awareness of the inexplicable hate they received.
The video has now been viewed more than 1.4 million times, which Duke uploaded alongside the caption: “My family got my boyfriend a car!! I love you @chrishunter07”.
The heart-warming clip shows the high school couple arriving at a car shop after Duke’s family had told Hunter they were going out for lunch.
The car was waiting for Duke in the car park and had been wrapped in a red bow.
Clearly grateful for the generous gift, Hunter put his hands to his chest and said “No, I can’t” upon seeing it.
Duke’s mother quickly confirmed that the car was for him and Hunter subsequently gave each member of the family a hug.
The couple uploaded a follow-up video to YouTube on Monday in which they discussed the surprise, however, it prompted a slew of racist abuse and comments have since been disabled for the video.
“The comments on this video man... some of y’all disgust me,” Duke wrote on Twitter.
“More hate than love which is surprising tbh and it’s disgusting,” she added.
However, Hunter explained that the hateful reaction didn’t surprise him, writing, “I saw it coming, but Madison and I aren’t going to stop doing what we love.”
He also responded to one hateful tweet, writing “you don’t know anything about me my guy.”
Friends of the couple have been quick to rush to their defence, with one labelling Hunter as the “kindest most humble” person he knows.
