Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

What's the connection between Betty Marsden, Wendy Craig and Jane Asher (above)? Could it be cookery? Betty Marsden created the deep-throated culinary hostess Daphne Whitethigh on radio's immortal Round the Horne while Wendy Craig starred as the Can't Cook, Won't Cook mother in Carla Lane's unforgettable sitcom Butterflies. As for Jane Asher, well, at a push she could give you a burst of the old song "If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked A Cake". Actually, this explanation doesn't amount to a hill of beans. The pan connection is really all about Peter. All three actresses have donned the tights and the flying harness to gender-swap as JM Barrie's hero who whisks Wendy, John and Michael off to Never Land. Catch them chewing the fat with this year's real-life boy Daniel Evans about playing one of theatre's most famous roles with other illustrious "boys" including Dorothy Tutin and Susan Hampshire.
