Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Richard Alston Dance Company, South Bank Centre, London SE1 (0171- 960 4242) 7.45pm

Quite apart from their own estimable writing, the painful love affair between the poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud has provided fertile ground for other artists. Total Eclipse, Christopher Hampton's early drama about the two late-19th-century artists is the play he holds closest to his heart. Benjamin Britten's setting of Rimbaud's Les Illuminations (one of the few song-cycles Britten didn't write for his partner, Peter Pears) provided the basis for a ballet by Frederick Ashton, and Richard Alston's Rumours, Visions uses it once again to describe their affair. Alston's programme also includes his tribute to the elegant, buoyant music of baroque composer Rameau, which has caused some commentators to breathe the hallowed words "Mark Morris". The bill is completed by the UK premiere of Red Run, which comes complete with a live performance of the score by Heiner Goebbels. David Benedict
