From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.American actress Brooke Shields has revealed how Donald Trump asked her out.
Nearly two decades ago, Trump propositioned Shields, saying that he was “America’s richest man.”
On an episode of US talk show Watch What Happens Live, Shields told host Andy Cohen that the US president got in touch with her after the collapse of his second marriage.
“I was on location doing a movie and he called me right after he gotten a divorce,” Shields said.
She later explained that it was after Trump’s divorce from his second wife Marla Maples in 1999. The couple had been married for six years.
Shields went on: “And he said, ‘I really think we should date because you’re America’s sweetheart and I’m America’s richest man and the people would love it.’”
The actress however, turned down Trump, saying: “I have a boyfriend, he’s not going to be happy about it.”
Shields had also recently got divorced from her ex-husband, tennis player Andre Agassi, but she’d started dating her current husband Chris Henchy immediately after the split was finalised.
But Shields is by no means the first high-profile woman to have spoken out about being chatted up by Trump.
Last month, model and actress Candice Bergen revealed that the president had also made a move on her - when she was just 18. Fortunately Trump was also college-aged at the time, and they were both studying at the University of Pennsylvania.
“He was wearing a burgundy three piece suit, with burgundy patent leather boots, and he was in a burgundy limousine,” Bergen said of her date with Trump.
Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any chemistry: “There was no physical contact, whatsoever,” Bergen said, adding that she was home “very early”.
When asked whether she found Trump alluring by Cohen, Bergen responded: “He was a good looking guy and a douche.”
