At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. On Thursday, the Crikey! It's the Irwins star shared the clip on Instagram, with the caption: “Birthday Love. 22 years ago my parents decided to start a family. I will forever be grateful for their unconditional love and encouragement to follow my dreams.
“I chose the two most compassionate, dedicated and loving people in the world to be my mum and dad. There are no words to describe the amount of love in my heart for them both.”
In the moving video, which shows the late wildlife expert holding Bindi shortly after she was born, as well as other moments from her childhood, Steve calls the birth of his daughter “the most incredible wildlife encounter of my life.”
"Here's this little baby girl. I swear she just fitted right in here in the palms of my hands. It was a combination of adrenaline and just emotion,” the Crocodile Hunter recalled. “It was like a euphoric feeling. I was in total utopia. And I ran around the hospital. 'Look at this! Look at this!' And they're like: 'Yes, we've got our own.' 'Yeah, but you haven't got one like this one! Look at this little beauty! Look at this little beauty!'
“I'm showing everyone. The nurses, the other ladies that have just given birth. And they're like: 'Oh, crikey.'"
“I am the proudest father on the face of the earth. No doubt,” Steve concludes in the clip.
On Twitter, Bindi’s mother Terri retweeted the clip, adding: “Your dad’s love is still with you every moment of every day.”
The mother-of-two also shared a separate birthday message to her daughter, sharing photos of the Irwin family and writing: “Happy birthday beautiful Bindi. I’ve treasured every moment of your 22 years. You’ve filled our lives with so much happiness. I love you!”
Bindi’s birthday reflection comes after she and her husband Chandler Powell paid tribute to her father with a candle lighting during their March wedding at the Australia Zoo.
