From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The congresswoman showed her followers around her apartment during an Instagram Live video Wednesday night, where she joked that she has been living “like a completely depraved lifestyle”.
According to Ms Ocasio-Cortez, who built IKEA furniture as she chatted with her followers about current affairs, her lack of furniture or decor is the result of her busy schedule.
“I got sworn in January 3 and today is April something and I still don’t own a chair,” the congresswoman said. “Until today, when I got a folding chair delivered to my apartment.”
The Democratic representative of New York’s 14th congressional district then proceeded to build a tray table and a desk as she touched on topics ranging from border patrol and the president’s tax returns to her time management advice.
In response to one question about why she feels the GOP is out to get her, Ms Ocasio-Cortez said it’s because she “confronts them directly”.
The youngest-ever US Congresswoman also spent time discussing the Green New Deal with her more than 8,000 viewers, and the impacts of climate change.
Comparing climate change deniers to those who fought against African American rights during the Civil Rights movement, Ms Ocasio-Cortez said, according to the Daily Mail: “Just know, that in the present day, there are a lot of people who hide the fact that their families and that their grandparents fought against principles of equal rights in the United States.
“People who are trying to mock and delay this moment, I mean, I just feel bad for you. I just pity you for your role in history right now.”
Although the Congresswoman, who is from the Bronx, New York, is still working on obtaining furniture, her apartment, located in the Navy Yard neighbourhood of DC, does come with a rooftop infinity pool and a Whole Foods.
On social media, Ms Ocasio-Cortez’s transparency was met with approval.
“Love or hate her, AOC answering questions and talking policy live on Instagram while eating popcorn and putting together IKEA furniture in her empty DC apartment is the most refreshing and transparent thing I’ve seen from a politician,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another person said: “AOC just did an Instagram Live with popcorn and wine on the floor of her unfurnished apartment. FINALLY a politician I can relate to.”
