From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Amazon is full of unusual knick-knacks, but its latest offer, a $16 "Thinking Egg", is apparently little more than a pricey rock.

The item is currently being advertised on Amazon’s Unique Finds page, where it is described as “ergonomically designed as a useful reminder to help bring ease and mindfulness to the present moment”.

In addition to being crafted specifically for the purpose of encouraging its owner to think, the metal egg-shaped pebbles created by design firm Orijin Design Company also come in four different materials said to bring about various well-being effects.

According to Amazon, the solidified molten lava version has “grounding metaphysical properties”, while the brass egg, comprised of copper and zinc, is meant to “boost the immune system while also increasing melatonin”.

If you were looking for a calming effect, the white marble egg, made of howlite, is described as having strong “metaphysical qualities of grounding and calming” and the ability to help alleviate stress.

The final egg, hand-crafted from pine wood, helps with “emotional stability and concentration,” according to Amazon’s description, in addition to being antibacterial and antiseptic.

While it is not clear whether customers are meant to be holding the rock or placing it on a surface in front of them, as it is seen used in both ways in a promotional video from the company, people have been mostly happy with the purchase.

On Amazon, where the egg has just five reviews, four of them praise either the design or quality of the metal rock.

One customer actually described using the egg for its intended purpose, explaining that they hold the item when they are anxious to keep their hands busy.

However, one one-star review was less pleased with the $16 egg.

“The only thing this reminds me of is that I spent $16 on a @#@#@# metal pebble,” they wrote.

But, according to the design company, which started the egg through a Kickstarter project, the egg “might seem simple, but that’s part of the egg’s charm”.
