Madonna can only be admired for her perseverance
However, directing a film of her own life will bring a few challenges, writes Janet Street-Porter
Someone has had the brilliant idea of making a film based on the extraordinary story of a feisty woman who has sold more than 300 million records and spent her entire life determined to prove age is immaterial.
Of course, only one person could write this extraordinary story, and it’s the star herself, Madonna! And which director is sufficiently qualified to direct this epic? You’ve guessed it – Madonna!
It reminds me of the stories surrounding Barbra Streisand’s epic movie Yentl, which Barbra co-produced, directed and took the starring role in. One of the actors involved claimed she “controlled everything except location catering”. Elton John was happy for Taron Egerton to portray him in Rocketman, but I fear Madonna may not be so generous.
It might be easier to cast her daughter Lourdes as “young” Madge and then play herself for the later decades. The only trouble is, alleged cosmetic interventions (Madonna chooses not to address such speculation) have resulted in a face that is spookily unlined.
Based on her two previous attempts at directing, both of which were derided, Madonna can only be admired for persistence.
