Companies who deliver will profit from coronavirus - but broadcasters will need to up their game
Comedy, rather than serial killer dramas, will likely be most appreciated by those stuck at home, writes Janet Street-Porter
Who will benefit from the coronavirus outbreak? The stock market seems to be recovering (up to a point) – but the companies who will make the most profit out of misery will be the ones that deliver to our homes. Anything from food to music, books and any kind of diversion which can be enjoyed indoors.
Somehow I don’t think it will be the fashion industry, because most of us will be wearing something with elastic around the waist and every social event which might require a special outfit is being cancelled.
A couple of weeks ago, the boss of Primark warned that customers might experience “shortages” of some products because of disruption to production in China. Given that fast fashion is one of the main polluters of the planet, an enforced holiday from consumption could be viewed as a benefit to the environment.
Broadcasters will benefit from large numbers being under house arrest and available to watch – but will they rejig their schedules? If you’re feeling under the weather, a drama series about a serial killer or ritual murderer (anything in the Walter Presents slot on More 4, for example) is going to be too grim. Ditto most of the documentaries on the True Crime channel.
How about catching up with The Righteous Gemstones on Sky Comedy – about a hilariously politically incorrect family of evangelicals, who swear, defraud and behave atrociously. It’s a hoot.
