As the Brexit process continues, we must provide the most thoughtful and diverse range of opinions we can
Hopefully we can get you ruminating about some aspect of the process that you have not thought about before, writes Chris Stevenson
On the Voices desk we were always prepared for a deluge of letters and comments in the wake of the UK officially leaving the EU.
Given it is one of the most divisive topics for decades, our desk has received plenty of correspondence from both sides of the debate. For example, Tom Peck has seen plenty of praise for his view of the celebrations in Parliament Square, but he has also been the subject of plenty of ire from other readers too.
Iain Duncan Smith, the MP and well-known Brexiteer, is another to have split opinion. Some – as evidenced in our letters section today – have applauded us for hosting a plethora of views, while still disagreeing with the content of his piece. Others have just expressed their displeasure at someone like Duncan Smith being given a platform.
The impassioned nature of the debate around Brexit can make our job difficult, but as we enter the trade deal negotiation phase of our withdrawal from the EU we have to make sure we are offering our readers the most diverse and thoughtful range of opinions we can.
Constant negativity is something that has dogged both the Leave and Remain camps, often when referring to each other – but both sides have also expressed the view that they don’t want any more of it. On Voices, when there is cause of optimism, or an optimistic outlook, over Britain’s new era we will seek to provide it. But will also not shy away from the realities of our position, even if that involves some negativity.
We must keep you informed and hopefully ruminating about some aspect of the process that you haven’t before. Bearing in mind the point of view of those on the other side of Leave-Remain divide is important for all, including our politicians if the healing process often spoken about is to take shape. Constructive dialogue is important.
All I can say for sure as we enter the next period of this Brexit process is that you will be sure to let us know if you think we overstep the mark.
Yours,
Chris Stevenson
