The Scottish star is best known for playing foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC's political comedy The Thick oft, which won him both a BAFTA in 2010 for Best Comedy Performance, as well as two British Comedy Awards for Best Television Actor in 2010 and 2012.

The actor also has previous with BBC sci-fi series, appearing in the Doctor Who episode The Fires of Pompeii as Caecilius in 2008 and in Torchwood: Children of Earth as John Frobisher. He has also appeared in BBC series The Hour and will be appearing in a version of The Three Musketeers by the corporation, next year.

Capaldi also has a number of film credits under his belt, including Dangerous Liasions, In the Loop and World War Z, as well as an Academy Award for Live Action Short Film for his Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life.
