White: 1998 Deetlefs Sémillon, £6.99, selected Tesco stores

Made by the improbably named Kobus Deetlefs in the Cape's Breede River Valley, this is a delicately smoky, oak-fermented dry white with clean, ripe, peachy flavours. South Africa deserves to be better-known for its sémillon.

Red: 1998 Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon, Limestone Coast, £5.99, Waitrose

Boundary disputes in the Limestone Coast region are behind the tongue-twisting name of this Australian red. Despite the name, the wine is easy on the palate, with neat oak spicing.
