Wines of the Week:

2000 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine;

1999 Barbera d'Alba Fontanelle
White: 2000 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine sur lie Château de la Gravelle, £4.99, Safeway
There's a world of difference between bog-standard muscadet and the kind, known as sur lie, that has spent time gathering richness, flavour and spritz on its lees. This is the latter type, a brisk, refreshing bone-dry white from the Atlantic side of the Loire, with a tangy, appley fruitiness. Give it a go with crab or spaghetti alla vongole.
Red: 1999 Barbera d'Alba Fontanelle, Ascheri, Podere di Rivalta de la Morra-Verduno, £7.99, selected Sainsbury's
Famed for its white truffles, the Piedmontese foothill town of Alba is turning its hand to a more modern style of barbera. This vibrant, cherry-fruity red from the new-wave producer Ascheri, has plum fruit and fresh acidity, softened by oak. A fine match for roast shoulder of lamb.
