Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ashley Ward will become Bradford City's next summer signing today - if Blackburn Rovers pay him off.

Ashley Ward will become Bradford City's next summer signing today - if Blackburn Rovers pay him off.

The much-travelled striker is prepared to pack his bags and join Chris Hutchings' fast-changing squad in time for a debut against Liverpool on Saturday. But Ward is insisting on money owed to him in his contract at Blackburn and feels he is entitled to the cash as he has not asked to leave.

Bradford have offered £1.5m for Ward, but Blackburn want more money as they have to settle the striker's demands out of that cash. Rovers' manager, Graeme Souness, also needs all the money he can earn to fund a new bid to sign Brian Deane from Middlesbrough.

Boro have startled Rovers by looking for £4m for the experienced Deane, more than they paid for Lazio's Alen Boksic.

The Preston manager, David Moyes, is ready to sign the striker Richard Cresswell from Sheffield Wednesday in a club-record £800,000 deal today.

Moyes has agreed terms with both Wednesday and the player and should finalise the deal despite Cresswell's unexpected appearance for The Owls at Wolves yesterday.

Preston have also been granted a work permit for the American international striker Brian McBride, who is due to arrive this week from Columbus Crew for a year, with a view to an eventually permanent deal at a fee of around £1.3m.
