Rodman, who was driving a Bentley, was stopped Wednesday for a traffic violation, a passenger not wearing a seat belt, police Sgt. Bob Ciszek said.
"Also, the security in the area had reported he was possibly intoxicated as he was leaving a restaurant and bar," said police Sgt. Don Holford, adding Rodman flunked the field sobriety test conducted by a special driving-under-the-influence team.
The 38-year-old former NBA rebounding champion posted $2,500 bond and was released just after 10pm, said police Sgt. Loren Wyrick.
The smiling Rodman spoke briefly with reporters as he left jail, telling them he'd had only "a couple beers, that's all."
He had no criticism for the officers who stopped him.
"They're doing their job, they're doing their job," he said.
It was the third time within the past four months that Rodman has been arrested, although charges were either dropped or never filed in the previous cases.
Rodman was arrested August 21 in nearby Newport Beach after a disturbance at a restaurant and bar. But the Orange County district attorney's office decided not to charge him with misdemeanor public drunkenness because evidence did not show Rodman was so drunk that he could not care for his own safety.
Rodman, waived by the Los Angeles Lakers last April after spending a rocky seven weeks with the team, was arrested November 5 in Miami Beach, Florida, after he and his wife, Carmen Electra, allegedly had a loud fight in their hotel room. Both initially were charged with simple battery, a misdemeanor, but those charges later were dropped.
Rodman, who led the NBA in rebounding seven years, played on league championship teams twice with the Detroit Pistons and three times with the Chicago Bulls.
He was released by the Lakers after showing up late for several practices and missing others. Rodman indicated he would like to continue playing in the NBA, but no other teams apparently wanted to sign him.
