Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

MUSIC

HERBIE HANCOCK BAND

Show us yer Quadras, Herbie, show us yer Korg. The keyboard genius is here for the first time since the mid-Eighties. Never mind the nerdy devotion to technology, the spark that Miles Davis spotted in him as a 20-year- old is still there. The band members are: Vernon Black (guitars), Will Griffin (keyboards), Darrell Smith (keyboards), Bennie Maupin (sax), Lazzaro Galarraga (percussion), Bill Summers (percussion), Terry Lyn Carrington (drums). They also play the Phoenix Festival in Stratford on Sunday 17 July.

Sat London Clapham Grand; Sun London Forum

PHILIP GLASS

La Belle et la Bete, Jean Cocteau's film reprinted and uncut on the screen; the French scripts sung with English subtitles; and Glass's repetitive arpeggio runs. Live. It's a new art form.

Sat, Sun London Royal Festival Hall

FAPY LAFERTIN

Remarkable Dutch gypsy guitarist inspired by Django Reinhardt. Playing with the quartet Le Jazz.

Sun London Jackson's Lane Arts Centre

BERT JANSCH

Ex-Pentangle acoustic guitarist from Scotland who helped spark the English folk revival in the Sixties. Donovan and Dylan made a bit more money, but he's probably happier.

Sun London Islington Union Chapel

GRIMSBY JAZZ FESTIVAL

Shut your eyes and you could well be in New Orleans. 17 acts over two and a half days on one site, including the Leo Solomon Trio, The Dutch Swing College Band, Marilyn Middleton Pollock with Little M's Chicago Hoods, George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers, Emanon, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, and Arturo Sandoval and his Latin Combo.

Fri-Sun Grimsby Weelsby Rd King George V Stadium (info 0472 342422)

OUMOU SANGARE/ 4 ETOILES

Cool African double bill. The '4 Stars' are a soukous band from Congo/Zaire. Oumou is a Malian woman who reworks her country's traditional music of the Wassaoulou Hunters, heavy on the harp. You'll love it.
