Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Pittsburgh 4, Boston 2

Pittsburgh 4, Boston 2

German Titov scored Pittsburgh's first short-handed goal this season and the Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory under new coach Herb Brooks.

Martin Straka and Matthew Barnaby also scored for the Penguins, who were six games under .500 before Brooks replaced Kevin Constantine on Thursday.

The Bruins, coming off a 2-0 victory Monday over Phoenix that stopped a four-game winless streak, are 1-3-2 in their last six games.

Devils 7, Kings 1

In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Claude Lemieux and Patrik Elias scored in a 48-second span early in the first period and New Jersey matched its season high for goals.

John Madden and Jay Pandolfo also blitzed the Kings, scoring on a short-handed bouncer from the red line and on a breakaway, respectively, in a 49-second span in the second period.

Randy McKay, Jason Arnott and Sergei Nemchinov also tallied in the 36-shot assault against goaltenders Jamie Storr and Stephane Fiset.

Donald Audette was the only King to beat Martin Brodeur, who stopped 34 shots.

Predators 4, Lightning 4

In Tampa, Florida, Steve Guolla scored with just more than six minutes left in the third period to complete a four-goal comeback as Tampa Bay tied Nashville.

Guolla lifted a backhander over Nashville's Mike Dunham, helping the Lightning record their first four-game unbeaten streak in two years. The comeback was the biggest ever by Tampa Bay.

Mike Sillinger had two goals for Tampa Bay.

Patric Kjellberg had a goal and two assists for the Predators.

Oilers 4, Islanders 2

In Uniondale, New York, Bill Guerin had a goal and an assist for Edmonton night to help Tommy Salo earn his first win against his former team.

Salo, in his first start against the Islanders since being traded last season, made 24 saves as the Oilers won for only the third time on the road (3-11-3).

The loss, in front of a crowd of only 6,526, was the Islanders' team-record seventh straight at Nassau Coliseum. New York, which is winless in seven overall, dropped to a league-worst 2-10-1 at home.

Calgary 1, St Louis 1

In St Louis, Fred Brathwaite made 49 saves for Calgary as the Flames tied St. Louis.

Brathwaite had a shutout until the final minute, when Chris Pronger rushed the net and batted home a rebound with 38.1 seconds remaining to forge the tie.

The Flames nearly won in overtime when Marc Savard beat Roman Turek, but the horn sounded before the puck crossed the goal line.

Hnat Domenichelli gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 11:02 of the second period.

Sabres 3, Flyers 1

In Buffalo, New York, Buffalo took advantage of the absence of Philadelphia center Eric Lindros and goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck to win.

Maxim Afinogenov, Michal Grosek and Jason Woolley scored for the Sabres and rookie goalie Martin Biron continued to impress in place of injured Dominik Hasek with 23 saves for his 11th win.

Vanbiesbrouck was given a rest and Lindros sat out with soreness in his injured left hand, which was taped and still swollen before the game.

Blackhawks 5, Sharks 2

In San Jose, California, Bryan McCabe and Jean-Pierre Dumont scored 12 seconds apart late in the first period and Jocelyn Thibault made 35 saves for Chicago.

The goals by McCabe and Dumont gave Chicago, which broke a three-game losing streak, a 3-0 lead after one period and the Sharks never got close after that. San Jose ended its four-game homestand with a loss after two wins and a tie.

Kyle Calder added his first NHL goal and Michael Nylander and Steve Sullivan also scored for Chicago.
