Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tuesday and Wednesday's highlights comprise an art show displaying the work of newcomers in Zurich, an iconic hotel in England reopens and a beer awards ceremony in Germany, among other events.

Dolphin Hotel Opens
May 4
Southampton, UK

A favourite haunt of Orson Welles and Jane Austen, who supposedly spent her 18th birthday in the hotel, one of Southampton's most historic venues reopens as a 90-bedroom luxury hotel. Will the newly refurbished building, which dates from 1250, still host its six rumored ghosts?

Art Show Zurich

May 5-8
Puls 5
Zurich, Switzerland

Art Show Zurich is an international art fair for emerging artists. Artwork by artists from Belgium, Bulgaria, Cuba, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Macau, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Slovakia, South Korea, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the USA will be on show at the iconic Puls 5 building in Zurich's formal industrial quarter. Many of the artists will be present at the fair, enabling visitors to meet with them in person and discuss their artworks in detail. A special exhibition of contemporary Japanese art will be a highlight at this year's fair, with works of calligraphy, ceramics and creative contemporary forms referencing traditional Japanese art forms with a contemporary twist.

World Beer Cup European Awards Ceremony
May 5
Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany

Brewers Association, US-based association of beer brewers, began the World Beer Cup International Competition in 1996 to celebrate "the art and science of brewing." This event is often referred to as "The Olympics of Beer Competitions" because it awards gold, silver and bronze medals to the award-winning beers in 90 international styles, such as fruit and vegetable, experimental, coffee-flavored and Baltic-style Porter. It takes place every two years, and beers are judged by a panel of internationally recognized brewers, consultants, industry suppliers and writers. http://www.worldbeercup.org
