Thursday's selection: independent film buffs gather in Park City for the Sundance film festival, ball season kicks off in Vienna, men's prêt-à-porter collections are on view in Paris, and a photography exhibit about India, Pakistan and Bangladesh opens in London, among other events.

Sundance Independent Film Festival

This festival is the premier showcase for US and international independent film. The Sundance Institute has announced a new initiative for the 2010 festival, where the ten-day festival will now hold screenings in theaters across eight cities in the USA for its 26th edition.

Ball season opens
January 21 - February 15
Vienna, Austria

Highlights include the traditional Vienna Philharmonic Ball on January 21, the Tyrolian Ball - traditional costume required - on the 23rd and the gay and lesbian Rainbow Ball on the 30th. The Coffeehouse Owners' Ball on February 5 is deemed particularly atmospheric. Every year it attracts some 5,000 visitors to the Redoutensäle and Hofburg Palace. And it is not only the traditional waltz one can hear - contemporary sounds also feature. The Opera Ball at the Vienna State Opera on February 11 is a must-see.

Historical images of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh
January 21-April 11
London, UK

For the first time, 150 years of history of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan will be on show in London at the Whitechapel Gallery. W here Three Dreams Cross: 150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh presents more than 300 photographs by 50 artists from the Drik Collection in Bangladesh and the Alkazi, among others.

Men's Prêt-à-Porter
January 21-24
Paris, France

The fall/winter 2010/11 collections will be showcased in European fashion capitals, with Milan starting the presentations January 16 and Paris following January 21. London Fashion Week, which recently added a day specifically dedicated to men's fashion, will open February 19. In New York, men's and women's ranges will be shown alongside each other from February 11.
