Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

2001 La Baume Viognier, Vin de Pays d'Oc, £4.99, Waitrose

There's ordinary viognier from the south of France, and then there's viognier with the real peachy taste of the Rhône's pricey grape variety. This aromatic, dry white from la Baume is in the latter camp, a fresh, ripe, flavoursome southern French example.

2000 Sainsbury's Classico Selection Chianti Classico, £7.99, Sainsbury's

The Tuscan winery Cecchi is behind this classic, made-for-Sainsbury's chianti, which oozes with the voluptuously ripe and juicily cherryish fruit of the sangiovese grape, while a light touch of oak adds spice, elegantly framed by the wine's structure of savoury tannins. As enjoyable with a no-frills pasta dish as an intimate dinner à deux

2001 Vavasour Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, £7.99, Oddbins

One of the stars of the new sauvignon blanc vintage in New Zealand, this super-crisp, full-flavoured dry white appears to have come down in price. With its abundance of green bean flavours and its tropical zest and zing, it should be snapped up for lazy summer Sundays.

2000 Cabernet Sauvignon del Montello e Dei Colli Asolani, £5.49, Majestic Wine Warehouse (buy six at £4.67 each)

From the Venegazzu Estate in the Veneto hills, this is a stylishly packaged, attractively leafy cabernet sauvignon rounded out by a light touch of oak and a gluggable fruit quality in the blackcurrant spectrum of flavour. An affordable, everyday red.
