Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

What’s the perennial pop star been up to now?

Sir Cliff has publicly addressed speculation surrounding his sexuality by asking: “If I was gay would it make any difference?”

And would it? Do we really care in this day and age?

Perhaps not, but the 73-year-old Peter Pan of Pop, who has sold an estimated 250 million records worldwide, admitted that the speculation about his sexual orientation had been painful when he was younger.

Times have changed since then.

It was a different world when he had his first hit in 1958. Sir Cliff continued: “I have got gay friends. Most people have gay friends. Would you not come to my concerts because I was gay? I hope not.” Sir Cliff made his candid remarks in an interview for the Australian TV programme A Current Affair.

Any other revelations?

Hold on to your hats, folks. The veteran crooner also revealed that he has never trashed a hotel room or chucked a TV out the window.

What? How does he occupy himself on tour then?

A spot of cleaning, apparently. “My band always used to say, ‘Cliff never trashes a hotel room. When he goes in, he usually cleans up, Hoovers, checks the curtains are straight’.
