Nintendo’s rocky year might be finally be at an end, with the company beating market expectations to post a net income of 14.3bn yen ($132m; £82m) in the quarter ending September.
Mounting losses and falling sales have stymied the company for months, but it seems that a number of new titles – most noticeably the universally-praised Mario Kart 8 – have boosted customer interest.
The company tripled its Wii U sales this quarter compared to last year, shipping some 610,000 consoles. It claims that with the recent launch of Hyrule Warriors and the upcoming Smash Bros the Wii U should be in for a healthy Christmas.
However, the company has still only shipped 7.29m units to date after launching the Wii U in November 2012. This doesn’t compare too favourably to Sony’s PS4 which broke sales of 10 million units worldwide in August this year after launching last November.

Nintendo also has to look to the success of its handheld console the 3DS. Sales of the device have been declining over the past six months and although the company highlighted the success of quirky life-sim Tomodachi Life (3.12m sold) it’s hoped that the launch of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire before Christmas will life the console from the doldrums.
