A picture of the controller for the upcoming Nintendo NX console may have been leaked.

Images claiming to show the controller were posted on Reddit by a user named perkele37, who had made no previous posts before publishing the images.

According to perkele37, the pictures show a prototype controller for the NX's developer edition, so they may not represent the final design.

They also wrote that the controller, which is clearly marked in the images with a sticker reading 'confidential property', is fitted with a headphone jack in the bottom, and gives users vibrating haptic feedback during gameplay.

Adding more information, they said only the upper 'nubs' of the sticks move, while the bottom part is static, and the 'rollers' visible on the top of the device look and feel the same as mouse wheels.

The images resemble the controller depicted in a Nintedo patent from last year

There's no way of knowing whether these images are genuine or not, but that hasn't stopped internet detectives from looking into it - one redditor said one of the sticks appears to have been 3D printed, while others used the keyboard in the background of the pictures to suggest they were taken in Sweden or Finland.

No-one knows for sure, but the pictures do look very similar to those included in a patent application for a controller filed by Nintendo in June. They also match up with another 'leaked' image from this month, although that one may have been faked.

Nintendo aren't commenting on the authenticity of the controller, so the hype will have to continue until the E3 gaming conference in June, when the company is expected to reveal more details.
