Lara group chooses Canada over UK

The UK video games lobby has again called for industry tax breaks after Square Enix, which publishes the Lara Croft series, chose to open a new studio in Canada rather than Britain.

Richard Wilson, the head of Tiga, said the decision "confirms once again that Canada's tax breaks are attracting investment and generated jobs".

Square Enix, which bought UK group Eidos in 2009, is to open the new studio in Montreal. Gareth Edmondson, chief executive of Thumbstar Games, said the decision was "a blow for the UK and European games industry" and called for a domestic tax break.

The ninth instalment of the Tomb Raider series will be released next year.
