A new fan-made modification has been posted online, which makes Grand Theft Auto V compatible with virtual reality technology.

A modder known by his Reddit handle LukeRoss00 created the mod, called “R.E.A.L.”, and made it available to download freely from the website github.com.

“R.E.A.L.” lets players experience the entirety of GTA V’s story mode in immersive first-person, with the aid of a VR headset. The mod is not available for the console versions of the game.

Fans have been trying to perfect a VR mod for GTA V for years, but “R.E.A.L” represents the most successful effort to date.

According to GTA Boom, no previous mod has “succeeded quite as spectacularly as this”.

The practice of modding – modifying a game’s code to add to or alter the existing content – is a contentious issue with some game companies. GTA V has a very active modding community, which Rockstar, its studio, tolerates, as long as the mods only affect single-player gameplay.

In a statement, Rockstar said: “Our primary focus is on protecting GTA Online against modifications that could give players an unfair advantage, disrupt gameplay, or cause griefing.

“It also bears mentioning that because game mods are by definition unauthorised, they may be broken by technical updates, cause instability, or affect your game in other unforeseen ways.”
