The cover art for the Fifa 21 has been announced, and has already divided the franchise’s fanbase.

Electronic Arts‘ hit football simulation series has been criticised in the past for a lack of imagination when it comes to cover art.

Every cover in recent memory has looked reasonably similar, featuring the relatively unadorned profiles of marketable footballers like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the cover for Fifa 21 is comprised of a collage of rectangular pictures of PSG forward Kylian Mbappé.

Many Fifa players were quick to ridicule the design, with some branding it “hideous”.

“YO why does the Fifa 21 Box Art look like my Powerpoint presentation?” joked one Twitter user.

Another described it as “the ugliest video game box art I’ve ever seen in my life”.

“What in God’s name is the Fifa 21 box art?”, asked someone else.

Others compared it to the often derided cover art for Kanye West’s 2016 album The Life of Pablo, as well as referencing the “graphic design is my passion” internet meme.

However, many others defended the box art for its willingness to depart from tradition.

Fifa 21 will be released on 6 October.
