If Gareth Bale's status among the elite was in any question, the announcement that he will appear on the cover of Fifa 14 should dispel those lingering doubts.

The Tottenham forward will appear alongside Lionel Messi on covers in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East when the game is released in September for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Previous players to have adorned the Fifa series include Wayne Rooney, Kaka and Ronaldinho and is seen as an indication of the best and most popular players of the moment.

"The players on the front cover since I was a kid have obviously been legends of the game," says Bale. "It's a great honor for me and I'm very proud of it."

The Wales international revealed the news on his Twitter feed with the hashtag #dreamcometrue

The game is released September 27.
