From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

While the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has resulted in cancelled wedding plans all over the world, some resilient video game enthusiasts have turned to Animal Crossing: New Horizons to celebrate their nuptials.

In the recently released social simulator for the Nintendo Switch, players are able to travel to each other’s virtual islands to socialise – which is how people are able to arrange the events.

On Reddit, a user called u/Ashmush posted a screenshot from the game, explaining that his wedding had been called off as a result of the pandemic.

“My fiance and I had to cancel our upcoming wedding due to Covid-19, so our best friends gave us a surprise animal crossing wedding instead,” they explained.

“Im graduating from med school and not getting a graduation and our wedding was cancelled,” they continued. ”I was feeling pretty down about missing out on my milestones.”

“This made me so happy, I don’t even have the words to describe how much it meant to me.”

The post was met with an outpouring of support and celebration on Reddit, with others sharing pictures of their own Animal Crossing weddings and birthday parties on Twitter.

“Had to cancel my wedding in April bc of corona, but my besties surprised me w/ one on their island!” said one Twitter user.

The weddings won’t carry any legal weight but they’re still a touching display of people making the best of a bad situation.
