Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. From velvet sofas to cane chairs and sideboards, retro homeware has been on the rise for some time, but since we’ve all been spending more time indoors, the trend for 1970s-inspired design has skyrocketed.
The latest interiors obsession in the world of Instagram comes courtesy of the Murano lamp: a kind of table light made with hand-blown Venetian glass that was made in finite quantities after it shot to popularity in the Seventies.

The original design resembles the shape of a mushroom, with a bulbous base and delicate twists of pastel shades throughout. And, while authentic vintage versions of it are available to buy, Instagram’s favourite lamp doesn’t come cheap. Due to limited availability, a real Murano light will typically set back a buyer around £500.
So, where are all these super-stylish mushroom lamps we’re seeing on the bedside tables of our favourite influencers coming from?
The truth is that most of the funghi-shaped light fixtures you’re seeing on your feed are dupes that are almost identical to the original in every way, except for how much they cost.
Saving you from having to drop hundreds of pounds on a dose of Seventies nostalgia, Urban Outfitters has launched its very own take on the trend for a fraction of the price. Costing just £89, the ansel lamp comes in three different shades and, while the lights were only available in the US initially, they’ve now made their way across the pond.
However, you’re going to have to act quick if you want to get your hands on one. With so many interiors enthusiasts keen to buy into the trend, the pearl colour has already sold out – but there is still time to pick up the blue marble and tortoiseshell versions.
So, what are you waiting for? Here’s everything you need to know about the Urban Outfitters £89 ansel table lamp.
You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
