Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. In the booming business of candles, it’s hard to be surprised by a new scent – that is, until now. Catching our eye among Zara Home’s new arrivals is a brand new candle range, inspired by natural earthy aromas.
Channeling vegetable vibes (yes you read that correctly), one candle in the new collection is called betterave (the French word for beet) and boasts notes of the root vegetable and a hint of the flowering plant patchouli.
The candle you never knew you needed (or existed) has launched alongside similarly earthy tomato and oregano scents – with all the candles coming in pleasingly utilitarian metal casing and ranging from £17.99 to £25.99.
This latest launch from the high street trendsetter follows the brand’s hugely popular collab with Jo Malone, a stylish pet collection of beds, collars and coats and a pair of TikTok-famous pink jeans.
With the fashion label delivering the goods time after time, it’s no surprise that Zara Home is one of our favourite places for interiors – from chic yet affordable bed sets to vases that rival designer collections.

Zara Home betterave scented candle: £25.99, Zarahome.com
Made from 100 per cent vegetable wax and entirely palm oil free, the earthy aroma of Zara’s latest home fragrance owes to the sweet beetroot scent, beetroot leaves and base notes of patchouli essential oil. With the candle said to last for approximately 130 hours and affordably priced under £30, now’s the perfect time to experiment with the fragrances in your home and introduce a new and unusual scent into your living space.
Zara Home tomato scented candle: £25.99, Zarahome.com
Not as unusual as Zara’s beetroot scent, tomato candles have become increasingly popular in recent years. Zara’s now tried its hand at creating a rich and tangy tomato scent – mixing fresh smelling of basil leaves, bergamot and tomato leaves with a base layer of vetiver, creating an appealing woody aroma.
Zara Home oregano scented candle: £25.99, Zarahome.com
The third nature-inspired scent in Zara’s new range is an oregano candle, made from natural vegetable wax with top notes of Calabrian bergamot and a base of cedar wood – all working to muster up a warming and earthy fragrance. If you enjoy the aroma of oregano in your kitchen, you can’t go wrong.
Loewe beetroot candle: £70, Loewe.com

All scents in the collection, from tomato to coriander and juniper berry, are inspired by nature and Italian botanical gardens
Diptyque ambre: £68, Diptyqueparis.com
Praised by our tester in the best candles for autumn round-up, Diptyque’s ambre is a “rich, sophisticated blend of woods, balms and resins that somehow manages to be both earthy and outdoorsy and warm and comforting.” If your penchant is toward earthier fragrances then this one is worth investing in, with our tester adding that the luxury scent is the “candle equivalent of a blanket.”
Boy Smells gardener candle: £36, Cultbeauty.co.uk
This candle from Instagram’s most popular candle brand boasts a coconut and beeswax blend of vibrant oranges and flowering honeysuckle – all working to create a green and summery scent. Laboratory Perfumes tonka scented candle: £55, Laboratoryperfumes.com
This peppercorn infused scent is the fourth fragrance from Laboratory Perfumes and earned a spot in our round-up of the best candles for autumn. “Sweet vanilla-y tonka bean, mandarin and pink peppercorns make for an earthy, spicy scent that’s properly cosy”, our tester said. Adding that “it’s also one of the longest lasting scents we tried”, they praised how the candle lingers for hours after being blown out.
