With Valentine’s Day plans confined to the four walls of your home, much like every other date night over the past year, you might be scratching your head on how to keep things interesting.
But, what about emulating the experience of your favourite bar? Well, it’s just as easy to enjoy happy hour from the comforts of your home, too. Of course, you could just crack open a bottle of your favourite vino, but there’s something to be said for enjoying a cocktail.
And just because we’re in a national lockdown, it doesn’t mean that Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be a special occasion. After all, we’ll jump at the chance to celebrate something that will bring a little extra joy to the weekend.
Luckily, at-home cocktail kits – whether you have to play being a bartender yourself or are ready-made – are here to make it a little easier and are having a bit of a moment. Branding on point, the ideas are innovative and flavours, dare we say, better than some we’ve tried in some of our favourite watering holes.
To help you on your quest to recreate the bar experience, we’ve found some of our favourite looking cocktail kits that are bound to get you excited for the celebrations. You’ll just have to choose which one of you will be the designated mixologist.
You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
The Cocktail Man limited edition Valentine’s pornstar martini cocktail experience
Letterbox-friendly, this gift box contains everything you need to mix up a bar-quality Valentine’s Day cocktail at home. The box contains three 50ml Black Cow vodka bottles, as well as The Cocktail Man’s signature passionfruit liqueur, plus detailed instructions and vanilla sugar to garnish, as well as a Lovehoney massage oil. All you’ll need is a cocktail shaker, this KitchenCraft one was our favourite in our review of the best thanks to being user-friendly that’s big enough for two cocktails at a time.
One of our favourite letterbox cocktail brands Nio Cocktails, which featured in our guide to the best, has launched an all-new gift set range in time for Valentine’s Day. We were particularly drawn to the postcards from Venice cocktail box, since while you can’t be there in person we may as well transport to the Veneto region through the medium of alcohol. It features four limited-edition cocktails made in partnership with Select Aperitivo, a classic liqueur distilled in the heart of Venice. We’d suggest making an Italian evening of it and drinking the cocktails as an aperitif before indulging in a Pasta Evangelist kit, which took the top spot in our review of the best recipe boxes.
Made exclusively for Fortum’s, this pre-mixed cocktail has been designed for sharing with lovers and significant others. Best served on its own after a few hours of chilling, simply shake the bottle and pour. Serve without ice and garnish with a single cherry.
Manchester Gin Valentine’s Day at home cocktail package
Following the success of its at-home virtual gin tasting experience, one of our favourite distillers is turning up the heat again with this cocktail package. Each kit will contain six handmade chocolates from a local chocolatier, a 500ml bottle of raspberry infused Manchester Gin, and all the ingredients you will need to make six gin-based cocktails, such as a French 75. Recipe cards will be included, as well as the option to watch guided videos by founders Seb and Jen.
Crowned IndyBest buy in our review of the best letterbox cocktails, our writer said that “star mixologist Pritesh Mody and his World of Zing cocktails are consistently recognised as some of the best bottled creations”.
“Operating from a hi-tech cocktail lab in southeast London where molecular mixology is at the forefront, flavour wizard Moody mixes up a dizzying array of delicious cocktails using big-name spirits, expertly aged and brought to life with weird and wonderful handmade infusions, resulting in sensational sipping cocktails,” she added.
As such, we were excited to hear that the brand was launching a range bespoke new flavours ahead of Valentine’s Day, including a saffron and rose gimlet and a passionfruit margarita. The peach and elderflower spritz instantly caught our eye as a classic bellini-inspired cocktail, with fruity peaches combined with floral elderflower liqueur for a refreshing prosecco spritz cocktail. Available online from 3 February.
Bodega Rita’s house ‘Rita margarita – Valentines edition
If you’re looking to spice things up on Valentine’s Day, this margarita mix from independent restaurant Bodega Rita’s is just the ticket. Freshly made to order with 100 per cent agave tequila, fresh lime, hibiscus and triple sec, you can either shake or blend with ice before serving.
Less of a cocktail kit and more of an experience to be enjoyed together, independent microbrewery and distillery Eden Mill is hosting a virtual gin tasting afternoon on Valentine’s Day at 4 o’clock. This kit contains two branded tulip glasses, as well as two ready-to-drink cans and seven gins to sample, and you’ll be talked through the flavours and pairing options of each one. The perfect way to spend the afternoon. The brand also has a time for love Valentine’s Day hamper (Eden Mill, £245) which includes everything you’ll need to show your appreciation for your loved one, including chocolates and a selection of pre-mixed cocktails and spirits.
