Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Being dairy-free doesn’t mean should have to compromise on taste at Easter. We munched our way through milkless eggs for all budgets to bring you the best we could find.

1. Chococo Dark Chocolate Cocoa Nib Easter Egg: £9.50, chococo.co.uk

If you want an intense cocoa hit, this thick egg from Dorset-based artisan chocolatier is a good choice. Made from 67% dark chocolate and studded with sweet crushed cocoa beans, a small piece should satisfy your cravings and though it’s not huge for the price, it will last you. The bright purple stripy packaging is suitably spring-like, too.

2. Hotel Chocolat Milk-Free Milk Scrambled Egg: £15, hotelchocolat.com

It’s hard to believe this rich-tasting, creamy egg doesn’t contain milk. As well as the moreish egg, you get six individual chocolates filled with whole hazelnuts and raisins – kind of like a grown-up version of a Cadburys fruit and nut bar. Not only does it all taste great but the marble effect on the front of the egg makes it a bit of a show-stopper.

3. Moo Free Organic Dairy Free Easter Egg: £6.49, selfridges.com

Moo Free makes it their mission to create chocolate for kids who are dairy free. This one is dairy, gluten, GM and vegan free. The egg has that sweet taste of milk chocolate that children love, it’s just not as creamy as some on the list. Mikey Bunny on the box will capture little imaginations and they can read his story, too (or rope-in a willing parent).

Verdict
If you want the closest thing to a dairy egg, Chococo’s offering will give you that intense dark chocolate flavour or Hotel Chocolat’s ones are our pick of the milk choc eggs. Kids will love Moo Free’s fun creation, and for a luxury grown-up treat that will last beyond Easter, try Booja Booja.

Please note: Although all the eggs listed are dairy free, some may contains traces of lactose due to being produced in the same factory as other chocolate eggs.
