Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. All kids love snuggling up in a cosy hoodie, no matter what their age, and they’re a good way of layering up in the summer months when it turns a bit chilly in the evenings (or the middle of the day, knowing the UK). Rain or shine, our round-up brings you the best what's new this season.
1. George Silly Saurus Hoodie: £8, asda.com
Dino fans will adore this great ‘Silly-saurus’ hoodie, featuring a sweet character graphic and fun hood; almost as good as dressing up. You'll get change from a tenner, though you'd never guess it from the quality.
2. Heart Zip Through Hoodie: from £16, johnlewis.com
This number comes in an adorable multi-coloured heart pattern with contrast hood and lining. The colour doesn’t fade in the wash and it looks great with denim, but the sizing comes up slightly small so you might want to go one-up.
3. Roxy Hermitage Girls' Hoodie: £29.99, surfdome.com
This purple, pull-over style hoodie is our favourite for the season from popular surf brand Roxy. There's a kangaroo-style pocket on the front and it's nice and lightweight, so a great one for cool summer evenings.
4. Great Britain Hoodie: £27.99, gonecrabbing.co.uk
Gone Crabbing is a Norfolk-based family business that makes an outstanding quality range of kids’ clothing inspired by the sea. Our favourite of their hoodies is this simple one that’s available in navy, green, red and grey. They'll look right at home rock-pooling in one of these.
5. J by Jasper Conran Grey Hooded Cardigan: £20, debenhams.com
This hooded cable-knit cardigan looks adorable on tiny tots and is jersey-lined to make it more substantial and cosy. There's also zip behind the toggles so doing it up isn't unnecessarily fiddly. Available for newborns up to two-year-olds, it makes a great gift for summer babies.
6. Hi Gear Eldora Girls' Hooded Fleece: £10, gooutdoors.co.uk
This might not be the prettiest on the list, but it's a great price for a lightweight, super-soft fleece hoodie. It’s surprisingly warm, with its high collar and roomy hood, so is perfect for camping holidays or outdoor activities like kite-flying. Also available in red, for girls up to the age of 12.
7. Cotton Rich Badge Hooded Top: £12, marksandspencer.com
You get a lot of bang for your buck with this bright red varsity-style hoodie that’s made in a rich cotton blend. There are two handy pockets and assorted America-themed patches (with slogans like 'Las Vegas' and 'Desert Hills Nevada'), plus an elasticated ribbed trim around the hem and cuffs to keep out the cold.
8. Embroidered Hood Zip Thru Sweat: £24, fatface.com
This is as comfy as they come, thanks to the comfy fabric and fleece-lined hood. There’s a branded leather zip pull that won’t break on you like many plastic ones on kids’ hoodies do and the contrast embroidered pattern round the hood keeps it from being plain.
9. Oliver Hoodie: £21, crewclothing.co.uk
This coastal-inspired striped hoodie is made from soft-brushed cotton, with a waffle-lined hood and sailing coordinate detail (though we've yet to ascertain what they mean). It’s true to size and looks great with pretty much anything.
10. Converse Hoodie: £35, mothercare.com
If they're already fans of the trainers, they'll love this Converse brand hoodie, which comes in either pink or navy - though we think navy will look great on the girls, too. The fabric is top quality but you need to wash cold so the colour doesn't fade.
11. Pirate Hoodie: £32, thewhitecompany.com
Young swashbucklers will love this knitted hoodie, complete with moustachioed pirate and notch-neck. The lovely pale blue colour will look particularly good with denim or light chinos.
12. Appliqué Hoodie: from £24, boden.co.uk
There's something to suit every girl with this appliqué hoodie, which is available in two designs: this grapefruit-coloured version with star motif and grey marl with floral pattern anchor. It’s also extremely well made, meaning that it looks great no matter how many times you wash it.
13. Boys' Hooded Sweatshirt: £19.95, joules.com
Even if your child has an easily irritated skin condition like eczema, they’ll find this super-soft 100 percent cotton pullover easy to wear. Available in a fresh lemon colour or these nautical inspired stripes, it’s lightweight and great for layering.
14. Leaf Print Hoodie: £12, mothercare.com
It’s not always easy to find a patterned hoodie for boys, but this all-over tropical leaf print nails it. It will look great with denim jeans for the winter and plain shorts in the summer and has a soft, jersey-lined hood.
Verdict:
Crew Clothing’s Oliver Hoodie is well-made and suits all ages, while girls might prefer the Fat Face Embroidered Hood Zip Thru Sweat. For tiny kids George’s Silly Saurus Hoodie gets our recommendation – and it’s a great price, too.
