Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. If you’re a fan of all things beauty, you’re likely to already have Caroline Hirons on your radar.
Thanks to her two decades of experience and matter of fact approach to just about everything, she has garnered a cult following of fans who loyally shop based on her advice and recommendations. And for good reason too.
When Women’s Health asked her to share her favourite three skincare products she uses in the morning, she heralded Zelens daily defence sunscreen as being “truly brilliant.”
She added that it “absorbs really easily and quickly” into her skin and “doesn’t interfere with any make-up” applied afterwards.
According to Hirons, bestselling author and qualified aesthetician, SPF should always be the last product applied in your skincare routine. When it comes to application, it should be used 15 to 20 minutes before going out into the sun and should be reapplied every 90 minutes, increasing the frequency if you are getting wet.
Owing to the damage the sun causes, it’s imperative to wear protection every day, and SPF has a whole host of benefits, but most importantly, it can reduce the risk of sun cancer. So, a high-quality sunscreen should be a lynchpin in your beauty bounty.

Zelens daily defence sunscreen SPF30, 100ml: Was £55, now £34.99: Amazon.co.uk
According to Hirons, this product provides protection against UV rays yet will not exacerbate sensitivity or leave your skin feeling greasy. That’s not all though, it contains antioxidants, which help to repair the skin barrier, and hyaluronic acid for extra hydration. When speaking about this exact SPF, Hirons told Women’s Health that this product absorbs quickly and doesn’t interfere with make-up, so we think it sounds like the ideal lightweight texture.
While we’re yet to get out hands on this exact sunscreen, we have reviewed the Zelens body defence sunscreen SPF30 (£55, Lookfantastic.com) in our guide to the best body SPFs, with our writer noting that it felt “more beauty treatment oil than sunscreen.” Similarly to the face SPF, the body defence features “organic UV filters,” and leaves “skin soft and supple after use.”
If £55 for 100ml of SPF is a little punchy, we’ve got some good news. The Zelens daily defence sunscreen is currently on sale on Amazon and has been reduced by a whopping 38 per cent. What’s more, it’s currently out of stock at John Lewis & Partners, Lookfantastic, Cult Beauty and SpaceNK, so it’s clearly a hugely popular product. We’d suggest adding it to your basket ASAP.
After all, in the immortal of Baz Luhrmann, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.”
