It’s not long until Mother’s Day and after what’s been a rather difficult 12 months, we don’t think there’s been a better year to shower the queen in your life with some serious love.
Chances are, despite not being physically with them that much, there’s been a mother figure in your life that’s helped to pull you through your lowest moments.
So, while it’s important to show your appreciation every day, Mother’s Day is a great excuse to make an extra special effort.
Unless you’re living with your mum, it’s likely you’ll be celebrating from afar, so to help make it a little easier, we’ve found our favourite greeting cards to send.
From independent artists to big-name brands, there’s a host of ways you can express your love for your old dear, including having a card delivered directly to them.
We’ve included those that are funny, a special one for your grandma and even a card from their dog. There truly is something for everyone here.
You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
Boomf Mother’s Day pop up card
Looking for something a little different this year? Enter a pop-up card, which can be personalised with some of your favourite photos of you and your mum. Once opened up, there will be an explosion of confetti and they’ll be left with a meaningful cube they can cherish. The perfect option if you need to send it directly to them.
For every Mother’s Day card bought from thortful, the brand is donating 5p to NHS Charities Together, which provides funds and support to the NHS and its frontline workers and volunteers. So far it has raised more than £14,000 of its £110,000 target.
Brand credentials aside, if you’re looking to show your appreciation for your mum through the medium of a Gavin and Stacey Mother’s Day card, this Nessa-inspired number is perfect. There’s also a Gwen-based “mother of omelettes” option (£3.29, Thortful.com), should your mum be the queen of cooking.
Shop The Clock Design happy Mother’s Day grandma card
If you’re buying a Mother’s Day card for your grandma, we love this gorgeous floral number from an independent designer. Made from thick, high-quality card and featuring a bold illustration, this is the perfect way to say “I love you” to the woman who made your mum or dad who they are today.
Perhaps you want to send a Mother’s Day card from her furry friend to say thanks for her seriously top-notch pet parenting. If so, this is the one to do it with. Left blank, you can add your own message on behalf of the pooch. A sure-fire way to put a smile on her face.
This feels particularly pertinent in a year that’s been filled with a whole host of doubt and uncertainty, because sometimes the only thing that will help is a call with mum. If you’ve picked up the phone countless times for a dose of cheer, then this is the card to send. Blank inside, but you can opt to have it personalised and sent directly to them.
One of our all-time favourite illustrators Chloe Hall has produced a range of lovely floral cards so you can honour your mum perfectly. This watercolour seaside design is inspired by the British coast, and if you can’t wait to go to the seaside with your favourite companion, send this to them. It’s been left blank so you can personalise it with your own message inside.
We’ve recently discovered Avila Chidum’s brand Avila Diana, which works to increase representations of marginalised groups on greeting cards, and it has quickly become one of our favourites. Striking graphics adorn her designs, and the range for mothers and mother-figures are bold and beautiful. This card celebrates your Ammi, meaning mother in Urdu. You can also up your game with a personalised card.
Personalised cards are a great option for Mother’s Day and Moonpig is the ideal destination. This one allows you to upload a collection of your favourite pictures and send it either as an e-card, or in a standard or giant size.
If your mum simply is the best – and better than all the rest – Mother’s Day is the ultimate time to tell her. And there’s no better way to do so than with this Tina Turner-inspired card.
Let us not forget the step-mums – if you want to honour yours, this gold design will do the trick and then some. It’s left blank inside so you can personalise it with your message, to show your appreciation.
Sometimes the very best cards are the ones that say exactly what you mean in the simplest way. If that’s what you’re looking for, this design is the one for you. Available for personalisation, it can be sent directly to their door.
