10 best women's beanies
Keep that cold snap out where it counts with some cosy, on-trend headgear
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With the freezing temperatures touching base, a woolly hat is a great way to see us through winter. From fitted styles to slouchy, one or two pom poms, we’ve found a beanie for every style and budget.
1. Alder Hey Navy Adult: £8, matalan.co.uk
For less than a tenner you can get a versatile beanie in vibrant blue and grey, while also supporting a good cause. All the profits go to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Charity, and the hat comes in a variety of contrasting colours – as well as in a cute bobble version.
2. Hat with a veil: £7.99, hm.com
One for those who want to be fashion-forward, veiled beanies are an example of high street stores making catwalk trends affordable. H&M’s eight quid version is a bargain case in point.
3. Leopard beanie: £35, plumo.com
Plümo is an online retailer based in Britain which regularly works with artisans worldwide to produce independently designed clothing and accessories. This beanie from its latest collection is for the animal print lovers. It’s got a slouchy fit and the acrylic-mohair combo makes it super-soft.
4. Mira Mikati: £130.32, shopbop.com
The London-based Lebanese designer, known for her playful designs, has collaborated with online retailer Shopbop to create a capsule collection of clothing and accessories. This navy knitted beanie with its colourful cartoony patches is made from 100 per cent wool and it comes in a bright poppy red, too.
5. Eugenia Kim: £155, net-a-porter.com
This might be black, but it’s a statement piece thanks to the two faux fur pompoms that resemble Mickey Mouse’s ears (currently en vogue, trust us). Made from wool, this one’s soft and very cosy.
6. Marc by Marc Jacobs Don’t Sweat My Pet: £32.50, theoutnet.com
The Outnet’s our go-to site for discounted designer gear. There are loads of great beanies on there but this one from Marc Jacob’s diffusion line particularly caught our eye. It features a blue bunny with an embellished eye detail and is made from a really soft Merino wool.
7. Faux Fur Pom Beanie Hat: £14, topshop.com
This one comes in eight different colours. We’d go for the poppy red to cheer us up on a dull winter’s day but there are more muted shades to choose from. Unlike some others on the list, it’s machine washable, too.
8. Superdry Stripe Beanie: £20, very.co.uk
Navy and white always look good together. Add a chunky turn-up hem and a contrasting yellow bobble into the mix and you’ve got a hat with talking points.
9. Diesel K-stopper Hat: £45, zalando.co.uk
The brightly coloured stripes really pop on this wool-mix hat from the Italian jeans specialists. It has a relaxed fit and is also available in black.
10. Beige knitted pom pom: £13, riverisland.com
We like the two-tone pom pom and the adaptable turn-up hem on this one from River Island. Beige is super versatile, but this design also comes in navy, burgundy, purple and black.
Verdict
If you want to make a statement without the need for bright colours, we recommend H&M’s affordable version of the on-trend veiled beanies. However, if you do like bold hues, Topshop’s poppy red style is a winner. If you'd rather go for playful styles, we recommend Marc by Marc Jacobs’s bunny hat or Eugenia Kim’s double pom pom.
