Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Amazon's huge Prime Day event is finally here, with discounts on more than a million products which are up for grabs for Prime members only. If you're not a member, fear not – you can sign up anytime, and with the online retailer currently offering £20 off its annual subscription, there's never been a better time to join.
Amazon is offering deals on all its own-brand products during the whole of the Prime Day period. But, with so many smart home devices to choose from in Amazon's range, it can be difficult to decide which one will suit you. Luckily, our technology critic, David Phelan has given us some top tips on how to make the most of the sale.
"The Echo series of devices are always popular. Alexa, the company’s virtual personal assistant is the same on all models, so if you just need her to answer questions, adjust compatible smart home devices or tell you a joke, the Echo Dot will do.
If you want a screen, so you can see the time, get a visual image of the weather or spot news items, the Echo Spot is compact and superb. But if you want music playback, then the Echo Show is easily the best and comes with a big 10 inch display. The other models are the Echo, which is a good all-rounder, and the Echo Plus which builds a networking hub for other smart devices.
Amazon also makes a great smart TV gizmo, the Fire TV Stick, which has a microphone in the remote control so you can talk to Alexa in the same way. Just choose between models with 4K TV compatibility or without, according to what kind of TV you have.
Alexa is also to be found in the company’s outstanding range of tablets which start ridiculously cheap (even before Prime discounts) and rise to highly affordable. Choose according to the size screen you need."
As well as finding you the best deals on Amazon devices, we are also rounding up the best deals in tech, home appliances and gardening and DIY, so be sure to stay tuned for more discounts as the event progresses. Happy shopping!
