Junipero Serra - Saint, Sinner or both?
The man who Pope Francis is making a saint on his US tour has attracted some controversy

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Junipero Serra was a missionary who Pope Francis just canonised on his tour of the U.S.
Not everyone agrees on Serra's sainthood though.
Serra is credited with bringing Catholocism to California in the 1700s but at the cost of thousands of Native American lives.
It is believed that rape, beatings and infectious diseases were used to subjugate the indigenous population as a means of forcing their religious conversion.
Serra's supporters blame much of this on earlier colonisers, with the Spanish supposedly being responsible for all the syphilis at least.
California governor, Jerry Brown, has called Serra 'a very courageous man.'
His sainthood is ever further under scrutiny for not fulfilling the church's criteria of performing two miracles. He is credited as healing a nun with lupus but appears to have bypassed the usual two-miracle verification process for canonisation.
