Shoppers are turning their backs on the environment and packing supermarket goods into single-use plastic bags, official figures reveal.
Despite a massive drive by retailers, green campaigners and politicians, more than 6.4 billion carrier bags were used last year compared with 6.1 billion in 2009, reversing a steady four-year decline.
