Michael McCarthy, The Independent's Environment Editor, has been awarded the Dilys Breese Medal of the British Trust for Ornithology.
The recognition is for excellence in environmental communication, and especially for his work highlighting the decline of Britain's summer migrant birds such as the nightingale, the turtle dove and the cuckoo.
Presenting the award, the president of the BTO, Baroness Young, said: "Michael can grab your heart with a small number of words."
