From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While all eyes were on the ostentatious outfits celebrities wore to this year’s Met Gala, there were some equally dramatic hair and make-up looks to match.

The right beauty look completes any ensemble, and few recognised that better than Zendaya – co-chair of the event – and Met veteran Kylie Minogue.

Challengers star Zendaya caused a stir on the red carpet in two outfits: the first an ethereal blue and green tulle gown by Maison Margiela, and the second dipping into Givenchy’s archives in a black gown from the 1996 couture collection.

Her hairstyle to go with both looks was both wild and elegant at the same time. Her hair stylist, Ursula Stephen, described the inspiration as “subtle beauty, very delicate, very confident”.

Zendaya had her hair pulled into a chignon at the nape of her neck, with wisps escaping from the side.

Stephen collaborated with Dyson for the fashion-forward look, which you can recreate at home by following these steps…

1. Once the hair is shampooed, add Living Proof Triple Bond Complex.

2. Blow dry the hair using the Dyson Supersonic r™ Professional Hairdryer at high heat and high air flow settings

3. Once the hair is dry, add Living Proof 5-in-1 Styling Treatment.

4. Gather the hair into a sleek, low bun and secure with a hair tie, twist and pin the hair into a beautiful shape (I channeled a calla lily)

5. Next, fuss up the top layer of hair separating from the rest of the hair.

6. Using the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener at low heat settings, curl flyaways to create an angelic finish.

7. Tease and shape these pieces to suit – hold in place with Living Proof Flex Hairspray.

Zendaya wasn’t the only one making a statement with her beauty look.

Padam Padam singer Minogue was attending her first Met Gala in 10 years, walking the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in a Diesel dress embellished with micro crystals that sketched out the shape of a woman’s body.

Make-up artist Daniel Sallstrom created Minogue’s beauty look using MAC products, swiping on a bold red lip and smokey eyes.

“The inspiration for the look was to merge Kylie with the dress that Glenn [Martens] and Diesel designed for her,” Sallstrom said.

“Confident, sexy and beautiful Kylie truly radiates to me, so the beauty had to match her sparkling crystallised denim dress. Eyes smokey and seductive paying a slight homage to her Noughties era, with the skin sparkling like diamonds.”

Keen to get the look yourself? Sallstrom has broken down his process…

“I started off by prepping Kylie’s skin with Hyper Real Balm and Serum, and Studio Radiance Primer paired with the Studio Radiance Serum Powered Foundation. I contoured and chiselled her face with the Sculpt and Shape Contour Palette,” he said.

“To frame the eyes, I used the new Pro Brow Definer and sealed them in with Pro Locked Brow Gel. I blended an array of brown and nude hues of eyeshadows around the eye to lift and felineify the eyes. Shades in Omega, Brule, Sandstone, Cork and Espresso Small Eye Shadow.

“I then added MACStack Mascara in black to pump up her lashes and finished off with Sick Tat Bro Colour Excess Gel Pencil Eye Liner in the waterline. For the most kissable and sexy lips, I lined Kylie’s lips in Cherry Lip Pencil and added Red Rock MACximal Lipstick with a little bit of Clear Lipglass on top.”
