Penny Dreadful, Sky Atlantic - TV review: A creepy spectacle featuring blood-splattered voodoo dolls

Reanimating corpses is one recycling technique that's still beyond the technology of waste-management plants, but it's par for the course in the demi-monde of Penny Dreadful's Victorian London.

Dr Frankenstein has just raised Brona Croft (Billie Piper) from the dead and – good news – apparently losing one's accent is one of the procedure's mysterious side effects (that dodgy Irish brogue had to go). Elsewhere, dishy Dorian was getting to know a new transexual friend and Sir Malcolm's Scooby-Doo gang were brushing up on their Verbis Diablo pronunciation.

This was an episode that mainly consisted of scene-setting for the action to come, but what it lacked in opportunities for Ethan to get his guns out (both kinds), it made up for in sheer creepy spectacle. The scene in which Ms Poole (Helen McCrory) retreated to a basement room to cut the heart from a baby, while blood-splattered voodoo dolls looked on, was a shocking reminder of what this show can do.
