The final series of shows are usually highly anticipated, but after Kevin Spacey was dropped from the Netflix hit he starred in, the last instalment of House of Cards has had a very different kind of hype this time around.

But the Spacey scandal aside, what kind of sign-off can you expect from the show that helped cement Netflix’s status as a game-changer in the TV industry? From the first woman President to an all-female cabinet, things are looking very different in House of Cards’ Washington these days. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s it about?

After Spacey’s departure and the character of Frank Underwood with him, it’s time for his wife Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) to step out from behind his shadow. But just because Frank is out the way, it doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of political schemers sharpening their knives behind the scenes. New nemeses the Shepherd siblings are on hand to throw a few stumbling blocks Claire’s way as she strives to enforce her version of the perfect American future.

Who’s in the cast?

Robin Wright as Claire Underwood alongside Diane Lane as Annette Shepherd

Wright leads the cast (and the country) as Claire Underwood and with an all-woman cabinet things skew female in the final series. New additions Annette and Bill Shepherd (played by Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear) will feature prominently, while old favourites such as Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) and Janine Skorsky (Constance Zimmer) are on excellent form.

What happens in episode one?

Bill Shepherd (Greg Kinnear) with President Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) in House of Cards Season 6

The first show foregrounds the level of scrutiny Claire will be under as the first woman president – but don’t go feeling sorry for her. After proving just how far she was willing to go to gain power last series (arranging the murder of her ex-lover for one), this is one politician who isn’t so much prepared to weather storms as to laugh in the face of them. The Shepherd siblings attempt to make their influence felt much to Madame President’s annoyance, and you get the sense this is one headache that isn’t going to ease off any time soon.

How can I watch it?
