Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. She might have enjoyed this week’s Eighties theme but it was an unfortunate X Factor result for Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (formerly Cole and Tweedy) when two of her acts were voted off in tonight’s double elimination.
Stephanie Nala and Chloe Jasmine were axed following the second week of live shows.
Nala, 20, who has reportedly been plagued by threats on Twitter this week, was the first to leave after winning the lowest number of votes from the public.
Jasmine , 23, lost the ‘sing off’ against Louis Walsh’s eight-piece boy band Stereo Kicks.
Introducing Jasmine, Fernandez-Versini said: “She’s faced adversity the whole way through. I wouldn’t swap her for the world.”
Stereo Kicks, several of whom have this week been hit by flu, sang The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand by You”.
Defending the first of her acts to go Fernandez-Versini said: “Stephanie is very distinctive so she was never going to be everyone’s cup of tea.”
After the sing off both Walsh and Fernandez-Versini chose to save their own acts, while Melanie Brown and Syco mogul Simon Cowell chose to send Jasmine home.
Cowell, who has faced a backlash this weekend over his caustic criticisms, said: “Chloe I really like you. You had a horrible song choice last night. And you didn’t sing that great in the sing off...Stereo Kicks Louis hasn’t got a clue what to do with you.”
Last night Cowell compared Fernandez-Versini to Kermit the frog for wearing a green dress, sparking a #CherylKermit Twitter hashtag.
Yet despite the controversy the ITV show lost out in the Saturday night ratings battle with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
