Over the years, the BBC has adapted dozens of William Shakespeare’s greatest works for TV, many of the best productions coming between 1978 and 1985 as part of the BBC Television Shakespeare series.

From Helen Miren as Rosalind in As You Like It to Anthony Hopkins as Othello, numerous fantastic actors took part in the series, raising the bar for all Shakespeare adaptations.

With the UK celebrating the great playwright’s 400th anniversary, the BBC are uploading numerous past adaptations to their store. Here’s a look at the 37 adaptations featured in the BBC Television Shakespeare series.

Also included in the gallery are such spectacular actors as John Cleese, Colin Blakely, Jack Galloway and Hugh Quarshie.

Around the UK, people are celebrating the life and work of William Shakespeare, with Stratfords of the world uniting for global celebrations and many more events taking place around the country.
