From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Black Mirror actor Will Poulter has explained his decision to step back from social media.

The 25-year-old initially cited the online reaction to Netflix’s choose-your-own-adventure Bandersnatch as the reason for abandoning Twitter.

However, speaking to Radio Times, Poulter explained that leaving social media “was a sum of things” rather than any negative comments about the Charlie Brooker-penned film.

“I’ve never experienced such a positive reaction to anything I’ve been a part of,” he told the publication.

“From a creative perspective, all the conversations that I’ve been privy to on social media have been really, really positive.”

He added: “It was a sum of things, informed by lots of different aspects of my experience with social media.

“There were some unrelated conversations that happened to be happening on social media – unrelated to the project – that were kind of negative and unnecessary.

“I didn’t benefit from reading them and responding to them. And I would like to think no-one really benefits from putting that into the ether, the kind of negativity that I witnessed. So I just thought the best thing to do was take a step back.”

Bandersnatch caused a stir online following its release, thanks primarily to the numerous endings the film has.
