Whoopi Goldberg has told vice presidential nominee JD Vance to “shut up” after he criticised Taylor Swift for endorsing Kamala Harris.

Swift endorsed Harris following Tuesday’s (10 September) chaotic election debate where Donald Trump bizarrely claimed that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were “eating dogs”.

The day afterwards, Vance appeared on Fox News to lament Swift and her politics, adding that the 34-year-old pop star is “disconnected” from American society.

The Ohio senator said: “We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans.”

He went on to tell Martha MacCallum that “when grocery prices rise by 20 per cent” or “housing prices become unaffordable” it doesn’t “affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire”.

An unimpressed Goldberg blasted Vance for his comments about the “Cruel Summer” singer, telling him to “shut up”.

Speaking on The View, 68-year-old Goldberg said: “You don’t know what affects her! You don’t about know her money! How you talking about her? Shut up, JD. I’m sorry that was very rude. Stop talking, JD.”

After returning from a break, Goldberg explained: “The reason I apologised is because I hate when pundits tell me to shut up and it’s not a nice thing to say but I do take it back. But the implication is… hush! We were just talking about how Taylor Swift endorsing Harris-Walz is triggering Republicans. It’s a big deal. It’s really freaking them out.”

In her endorsement for Harris, Swift wrote: “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most,” she wrote. “As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.

“I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

She added: “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”

In an apparent jab at Trump’s running mate JD Vance, the singer signed off her post as: “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.” The picture showed Swift holding her cat – Benjamin Button.
